Lettermen spent eight minutes defending himself on Wednesday’s “Late Show” and invited Alaska’s first couple to appear. Thursday, the Palins let Letterman know what he could do with his olive branch.

“The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show,” Palin family spokeswoman Meg Stapleton says.

Willow Palin, 14, accompanied the governor to a Yankees game Monday. “An awkward moment during the seventh inning,” Letterman cracked on that evening’s show. “(Sarah Palin’s) daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”

Apoplexy ensued. “Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable,” Palin’s husband, Todd, ranted on the family Facebook page.

Letterman said on Wednesday’s show: “Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was OK for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” He also said his joke was meant to reference Bristol Palin, 18 and a single mom (and not at the game). The Palins also have an 8-year-old daughter, Piper.

John McCain defended his 2008 GOP presidential running mate Thursday, telling Reuters by phone, “They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts.”

MAN UP: Chastity Bono, the only child of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is changing gender.

Publicist Howard Bragman confirmed Thursday to TMZ, “Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity.”

Bragman said Bono began the gender reassignment process shortly after turning 40 on March 4.

BROKEN RECORD: Carrie Prejean, who blamed her stance against gay marriage for not winning the Miss USA crown, says that stance also has cost her the Miss California USA crown.

“It’s just because of my answer, I think,” Prejean told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush Wednesday night. “None of this would be happening right now if I just said, ‘Yeah, gays should get married. You’re right, Perez Hilton.’”‰”

Hilton, a Miss USA pageant judge, asked Prejean whether she believed every U.S. state should legalize same-sex marriage, leading to the response that made Prejean better known than the actual winner (Kristen Dalton, for you Trivial Pursuit fans).

Pageant poobah Donald Trump had a prior occasion last month to toss Prejean on her scepter — and didn’t take it — before dismissing her Wednesday. Miss California USA director Keith Lewis reiterated Thursday that Prejean was fired because she missed “tens and tens and tens” of pageant commitments.

“I think if you tell your boss, ‘I’m not gonna do the job, I’m gonna do whatever I want, you can’t tell me what I’m gonna do,’ I think that you expect that your boss is gonna say to you, ‘You know what? You’re probably not supposed to be in this job anymore,’” Lewis said on CBS’s “The Early Show.”
